Book Tour: Soul of the Deep (Skin of the Sea #2) by Natasha Bowen | Author Interview

Welcome to my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours Book Tour for Soul of the Deep (Skin of the Sea #2) by Natasha Bowen. I absolutely loved Skin of the Sea, it was in my top 10 of 2021, so I was beyond ecstatic when I was lucky enough to get an interview with Natasha Bowen! You can find it just before the tour schedule near the end of the post.

Thank you Natasha Bowen for taking the time to answer my questions.

Natasha studied English and creative writing at Bath Spa University before moving to East London, where she taught for nearly ten years. She is obsessed with Japanese and German stationery and spends stupid amounts on notebooks, which she then features on her secret Instagram. One life.
One choice.
One sacrifice.

To save those closest to her, Simi traded away everything: her freedom, her family, and the boy she loves. Now she is sworn to serve a new god, watching over the Land of the Dead at the bottom of the ocean.

But when signs of demons begin to appear, it’s clear there are deeper consequences of Simi’s trade. These demons spell the world’s ruin . . . and because of Simi, they now have a way into the human realm.

With the fate of the world at stake, Simi must break her promise and team up with a scheming trickster of a god. And if they succeed, perhaps Simi can also unbreak her heart along the way, and find herself again.

Author Interview

In up to 9 words or emojis, without spoilers, what can readers expect from Soul of the Deep?

Love, death, betrayal, gods, transformation, fighting, mermaids.

Without spoilers, can you tell us a scene you had the most fun writing?  Which god did you have the most fun writing – in either book?

I really enjoyed writing about a particular tree in Soul of the Deep. I can’t say too much but the properties of it were perfect for the plot!

I had the most fun writing Esu in both books. In this sequel we see a different side to the orisa and more of a range of his personality and powers. I think this is integral to how orisas are presented in this series since they are deities, but with flaws and personalities, which only adds to the complexities of the story and their characters.

When you started Skin of the Sea, did you already have an idea of how Soul of the Deep, and the duology, would end?  Did you find it more difficult to write the first book or the final?

I didn’t actually have an idea of how the duology would end, only a rough idea which changed constantly! I found the second book easier to write because the world and the characters were already fully formed.

If you could spend the day with Simi what would you do with her?

Ask her to take me to summon Yemoja. Who wouldn’t want to speak to a goddess?!

Do you have any recommendations for someone who loved the Skin of the Deep Duology?

I think the Raybearer duology is a gorgeous fantasy story with themes of love and magic.

Do you have any upcoming projects (writing or otherwise) that you could share with us?

I can’t say anything specific yet but I’m working on another duology and a different book that I’m writing just for fun.
