Top 5 Anticipated Reads: July 2021 – June 2022 Check-in

I had planned on checking in way more often, but I have to start at some point. Here are all the releases I was interested in since I started this segment until now, so July 2021 to June 2022 (well, you’ll actually see it’s only until May because I forgot June, but it felt better as a year lol). Luckily, I missed a lot of months within that year so it may not be as dense as I fear. Going forward, to make sure to avoid so long posts, I’ll make sure to check-in quarterly and make it one of my quarterly check-in posts (way less daunting).

So how am I going to do this? This post will likely just be the cover, whether or not I’ve read it and my rating with a quick sentence or two on thoughts or a link to my review if they exist. I’m sorry because I know this is just going to be a super long post…. sigh, so without further adieu – let’s do this!

July 2021 Anticipated Releases – 4/5

Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Release Date: July 6th, 2021

I did read this one! Yay. I gave this one 3⭐ (review here), but I think it was my mood at the time. I’m definitely going to pick up the sequel.

The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass

Release Date: July 13th, 2021

We’re off to a great start! Read it! Loved it! Gave it 4⭐ Here’s the review.

XOXO by Axie Oh

Release Date: July 13, 2021

Another one done! Don’t jinx it! I didn’t write a review for it, but it’s perfect for summer/early fall! Gave this one 4⭐ too!

Untethered (Shielded #2) by Kaylynn Flanders

Release Date: July 20th, 2021

Not read. But I was thinking of rereading Shielded and then finishing this duology.

Gods & Monsters by Shelby Mahurin

Release Date: July 27th, 2021

And other one! I didn’t review this one on its own, but I did review the entire Serpent & Dove series. I gave this one 3.5⭐.

Wow I did well for July 2021! Don’t worry that’ll change.

October 2021 – 1/5

A Shadow in the Ember (Flesh and Fire #1) by Jennifer L Armentrout

Release Date: October 19th, 2021

Of course I’ve read this! I’ve also preordered the next in the series. I don’t think I will ever be able to review a JLA book – they’d never be cohesive, possibly not understandable lol. I clearly loved it and gave it 5⭐.

City of Shattered Light by Claire Winn

Release Date: October 19th, 2021

Nope, haven’t read this. I really want to, but this feels like it’d call to me more in the winter.

Vial of Tears by Cristin Bishara

Release Date: October 5th, 2021

Ok, don’t judge me. I forgot about this one. I think it’s because I don’t have a physical on this one. I’m still really curious about it though!

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen

Release Date: October 19th, 2021

I have almost picked this one up a few times now. I don’t know why I haven’t because I love Margaret Owen’s writing.

Vespertine by Margaret Rogers

Release Date: October 5th, 2021

Another one I’ve put on my TBR a few times – it was even a group read – but still haven’t read it. I’m hoping to read this one and Enchantment of Ravens soon!

November 2021 – 2/5

Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen

Release Date: November 2nd, 2021

Read! Loved! Top 10 of 2021! Here’s my review.

A Psalm of Storms and Silence (A Song of Wraiths and Ruins #2) by Roseanne A Brown

Release Date: November 2nd, 2021

Yes! Read and series completed! It felt good. What didn’t feel good? It didn’t live up to my hopes and expectations. I did give it 4⭐ on Goodreads, but A Song of Wraith and Ruin was one of my favourites of 2021 so I had high hopes.

Dreams Lie Beneath by Rebecca Ross

Release Date: November 2nd, 2021

Sadly, no. No reason for this one not to be read either – I got access to the eARC and audiobook. Sigh, maybe in the Fall.

You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao

Release Date: November 9th, 2021

I think this one upsets me the most so far. I wanted to read this one so bad – still do, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Maybe I need to get a physical copy to make me read it faster!

The Donut Trap by Julie Tieu

Release Date: November 9th, 2021

Bookstagram! This is all your fault! I saw this all over the place on Bookstagram and I had to have it… and of course still haven’t read it.

Release Date: December 7th, 2021

Nope…. and the Fairyloot edition is glaring at me as I write this… moving on.

The Ballerinas by Rachel Kapelke-Dale

Release Date: December 7thth, 2021

I was drawn to this cover and therefore, it was most anticipated lol I’m still interested, but going back, I don’t know if I’d claim this as a “most anticipated”.

The Hawthorne School by Sylvie Perry

Release Date: December 7th, 2021

I had an eARC of the audiobook for this…. there’s no reason why I STILL haven’t picked this one up.

The Midnight Girls by Alicia Jasinska

Release Date: December 28th, 2021

I’m still dying to read this one. I grabbed the audiobook when it went on sale, so maybe soon than without lol. I’ll be happy if I manage to read this before the end of the year.

Honest June by Tina Wells

Release Date: December 28th, 2021

I did read this one. It was cute enough. I remember not liking the main character – June, but I loved the illustrations scattered throughout the novel. You can find my review I wrote for the book tour back in December here.

February 2022 – 3/5

Across a Field of Starlight by Blue Delliquanti

Release Date: February 8th, 2022

Genre: YA SciFi Graphic Novel

First graphic novel on the list and it was a 4⭐! Here’s the review.

House of Sky and Breath (Crescent City #2) by Sarah J Maas

Release Date: February 15th, 2022

Genre: NA Fantasy Romance

I couldn’t wait for this one to release! The second I had my physical copy in hand I started this! Sarah J Maas is another author where I don’t think I could write a coherent review – it would just be gushing and gifs lol. But obviously I’m obsessed with this – 5⭐!

Golden Girl by Reem Faruqi

Release Date: February 22nd, 2022

Genre: Middle Grade Novel-in-Verse

I’ve read this! I just need to write the review. I did enjoy it – you’ll see a larger review eventually because it was an arc so I need to post it somewhere lol. I will say, it was well written and emotional – I ended up giving it 4⭐.

Count Your Lucky Stars (Written in the Stars #3) by Alexadria Bellefluer

Release Date: February 1st, 2022

I’m still playing catch up with this series, so no I haven’t read this one. But soon! I think lol.

Delilah Green Doesn’t Care (Bright Falls #1) by Ashley Herring Blake

Release Date: February 22nd, 2022

Genre: Adult RomCom

This was on my TBR last month and, I don’t know why but, I just didn’t end up getting to it. I have the audiobook though so I’m hoping to pick it up soon.

March 2022 – 1/5

Gallant by V E Schwab

Release Date: March 1st, 2022

Genre: YA Fantasy Horror Novel

Have I read this? Nope. Did I pre-order it? Yup… let’s move on 😅

A Magic Steeped in Poison by Judy I Lin

Of course I’ve read this and I’m impatiently waiting for the next in the series. It was 5⭐ and I’ll likely reread the series once we’re closer to the next one’s release.

Sundial by Catriona Ward

Release Date: March 1st, 2022

I put this on my TBR last month? month before? and I don’t know why I didn’t read it. I’m still interested – just need to pick it up.

Troublemaker by John Cho

Release Date: March 22nd, 2022

Genre: Middle Grade Historical Fiction

I had intended to read this for release, but I just didn’t get to it. Still interested but have been less in the mood for historical fiction.

April 2022 – 3/5

Very Bad People by Kit Frick

Release Date: April 5th, 2022

Genre: YA Thriller

Sadly I haven’t read another Kit Frick yet, but I want to! All I can keep saying is soon! It’s another one saved on my Scribd account.

Alone Out Here by Riley Redgate

Release Date: April 5th, 2022

Genre: YA SciFi Thriller

I’ve read this one too! I gave it 4⭐ and you’ll see my full thoughts at the beginning of August!

Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega

Release Date: April 5th, 2022

Genre: MG Fantasy

You saw me recommend this back in June as part of my Recommendations series where I recommend books based on certain themes. In this case it was 2022 LQBTQIA+ Reads. It also got 4⭐ from me, very fun.

An Arrow to the Moon by Emily X R Pan

Release Date: April 12th, 2022

Genre: YA Fantasy Retelling

Another one that I’ve put on my TBR a few times but just haven’t gotten around to it. I’m still really curious to read Emily X R Pan and I own both now – maybe another mini author binge I need to do.

Sofi and the Bone Song by Adrienne Tooley

Release Date: April 19th, 2022

Genre: YA Fantasy

This is another one I’ve read but need to write the review for – sitting on so many reviews apparently! I really loved this one 4.25⭐ – a little more than Sweet Bitter Magic.

Honourable Mention: Jagged Little Pill by Eric Smith

Release Date: April 26th, 2022

Genre: YA Contemporary

Well if I’m being honest, I may have forgotten about this one. Don’t judge! But I do have it saved on Scribd so at least it will never be truly forgotten lol. I’m curious, but I think it’ll be an audio I listen to while doing something else – so interested, but minimally.

May 2022 – 4/9

Why do I do this to myself – I made it extra hard and picked 9 this month 🙄 I would have been set if I had just stuck with my normal 5 lol.

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston

Release Date: May 3rd, 2022

Genre: YA LGBTQIA+ Romance

Starting off strong! I’ve read this one and I thought I wrote a review for it…. huh, nope I was wrong. We’ll just add it to the list of books I still need to review (and soon before I forget what happened!). I enjoyed this one and gave it 4⭐.

The Noh Family by Grace K Shim

Release Date: May 3rd, 2022

Genre: YA Contemporary

Full intensions of reading this during release week – always full of good intensions. But nope, haven’t gotten to this one yet.

Girl Overboard by Sandra Block

Release Date: May 3rd, 2022

Genre: YA Mystery Thriller

I read a bit of this before my interview with Sandra Block and I was really intrigued – I really wanted to continue! BUT I ended up putting it down for something else – I think a buddy read I couldn’t put off any longer – and just haven’t picked it up again yet.

Beauty and the Besharam by Lillie Vale

Release Date: May 10th, 2022

Genre: YA Contemporary Romance

I have so many of Lillie’s books on my TBR. I think I will like her writing. But once again, just haven’t gotten around to picking this up – I have high hopes to before the end of summer, but we’ll see.

Genre: YA LGBTQIA+ Horror

Sadly, no, not yet.

The Merciless Ones (The Gilded Ones #2) by Namina Forna

Release Date: May 31st, 2022

Genre: YA High Fantasy

Just finished this last night and haven’t written a review yet, but I loved it! It’s definately a “book 2” but it’s needed for the character, relationship, and world building. I thought this was a duology, so now I have to impatiently wait for the final book to come out. With the 3rd book not having a release date, I have a feeling I’m going to need to reread the first two, which I’m not mad about lol. Oh, it got 5⭐.

Summer’s Edge by Dana Mele

Release Date: May 31st, 2022

Genre: YA Horror

I loved this! The twists, the turns, the reveals! So good! You can see my full thoughts here – 4.5⭐.

And that’s it! Turns out I skipped June. Even though I’m technically failing (19/44 = 43%), I’m happy that I managed to read at least one of the books each month. I don’t have too many here that I would need to catch up on, but they likely wont all get read before the end of the year.

Have you been keeping up with your anticipated releases? Or are you like me – interested in all the things but very limited on time lol.
