Welcome to my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours Book Tour for Bound by Firelight by Dana Swift, Book 2 in the Wickery series. This series sounds amazing and I can’t wait to pick it up! Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to see the tour schedule for other content creators.
Thank you to Dana Swift for taking the time to answer my questions – you can find the interview at the end of the post.
Dana Swift started making up fantasy worlds when she was eleven years old and hasn’t stopped since. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned degrees in English and Advertising. While in college, Dana competed as a saber fencer and learned a thing or two about fighting, parrying and how it feels to fall in love with your sparring partner. She currently lives with said husband in Miami, Florida.

After a magical eruption devastates the kingdom of Belwar, royal heir Adraa is falsely accused of masterminding the destruction and forced to stand trial in front of her people, who see her as a monster. Adraa’s punishment? Imprisonment in the Dome, an impenetrable, magic-infused fortress filled with Belwar’s nastiest criminals—many of whom Adraa put there herself. And they want her to pay.
Jatin, the royal heir to Naupure, has been Adraa’s betrothed, nemesis, and fellow masked vigilante… but now he’s just a boy waiting to ask her the biggest question of their lives. First, though, he’s going to have to do the impossible: break Adraa out of the Dome. And he won’t be able to do it without help from the unlikeliest of sources—a girl from his past with a secret that could put them all at risk.
Time is running out, and the horrors Adraa faces in the Dome are second only to the plot to destabilize and destroy their kingdoms. But Adraa and Jatin have saved the world once already… Now, can they save themselves?
The heart-pounding sequel to Cast in Firelight, perfect for fans of epic, sweepingly romantic fantasy by Sabaa Tahir, Susan Dennard, and Mary E. Pearson.
Content Warning (provided by author): BOUND BY FIRELIGHT is a little bit darker and a little more violent than the first book, CAST IN FIRELIGHT. However, the sexual content and cursing is the same level as the first book with no sex scenes and only fantasy terms for curses (blood).
Trigger warnings (spoiler free)
Fantasy-related violence in fight scenes, blood/gore, talk of drugs and drug addiction (though it’s a made-up fantasy substance).
I did want to specify here there are NO scenes of sexual assault in this book.

In nine (9) words or emojis (or less), without spoilers, what can readers expect from Bound by Firelight (for those who haven’t read it). Same for Cast in Firelight?
Thank you so much for having me!
CAST IN FIRELIGHT: A romantic mistaken identities coupled with secret superhero identities.
BOUND BY FIRELIGHT: A romantic inspiring action-packed adventure full of plot twists.
And for both books I always find myself using the 🔥and❄️ emojis to represent Adraa and Jatin’s ability with fire and ice.
Without spoilers, what scene did you have the most fun writing and why?
There are so many scenes I loved to write. Most of them involve spoilers, so I’ll mention one from the beginning of the novel. In the first fifty to sixty pages Adraa goes on trial for what happened at the end of Cast in Firelight. It was so fun to use this moment to summarize the ending of Cast in Firelight for readers who might have forgotten while also leading the characters through a nail-biting moment that becomes the catalyst to the whole book.
I won’t say any more than that or I’m most definitely going to spoil something. And since I love talking about these books so much it’s not hard to get me to spoil something.
If you could spend the day with Adraa and Jatin, what would you do with each of them?
Oh, amazing question! I think I would want to spend time with them together and watch them banter and be cute. That sounds really weird though even as I type it. For my not weird answer I’d love to fly with Adraa and I’d love to train with Jatin. And I say train with Jatin vs Adraa because I think he might be nicer to me even though she might be the better teacher, lol.
Did you do any research for Bound by Firelight? Were there any interesting facts that you found that you didn’t end up using?
I think every book involves research. My biggest research element is a pretty big spoiler to the book so I won’t talk about that much. But for a hint I had to research and think about language.
Much of my other research was to fit small details of the story since some of the bigger worldbuilding elements were already established in CAST IN FIRELIGHT from research I’d done already.
Being the second book in the Wickery series, did you find the writing experience different from writing the first book in the series? If so, how?
Writing this book was so drastically different than Book One. First, I knew it would be published and that really motivated me. Second, I had a deadline for the first time in my writing journey so there was a little more pressure to write faster. Thirdly, the Pandemic struck during the drafting process and I wrote much of the second half in the months right after March 2020 when things were shutting down. Many of the routines and resources I used to motivate myself like going to a café were stripped from me and thus, I had a really hard time finishing this book. But I did it and I really love it.
It’s more intense and fast-paced than CAST IN FIRELIGHT and I also love its themes of strength, fortitude, and empowerment.
Are you working on the next book in the Wickery series or anything else? Are you able to tell us anything about it?
Right now, I’m working on a standalone YA Fantasy Romance. It hasn’t sold to a publisher yet, so we’ll see what happens with it, but I’m loving writing it and it’s so much fun.
