January 2021 Mid-Month Wrap Up

I’ve decided to do wrap ups twice a month. Why, you ask? Well because I’ve always wanted to do monthly wrap ups, but every time I went to do them last year I read so many books that it became daunting. So to solve that problem – or at least an attempt to – I decided to do mid-monthly and monthly wrap ups. These may change depending on how well this works, but I’m really hoping this will be something I decide to stick with.

During the mid-month wrap up you’ll see all the books I’ve read before it’s posted (as close to the 15th as I can get it) and a link to the review post or I’ll give a quick (couple sentences) review along with a star rating. During the month wrap up, I’ll give stats and show off what I read after the mid-month wrap up.

So with all that out of the way, let’s take a look at what I read for the first half of January.

Finished This Week

Check Please! #Hockey Vol 1 by Ngozi Ukazu

This was a reread for me. I wanted to read it before I read the final book in the series. This is a sugary sweet read that has bubbly, loveable main character who happens to be on the college hockey team and bakes up a storm (oh and he also vlogs). I think I loved my reread more than when I had originally read it. Oh and I’m beyond in love with the art style – it fit the sugary sweet read perfectly. I’m keeping an eye on Ukazu for more!

Check Please! Sticks & Scones Vol 2 by Ngozi Ukazu

After my reread of Vol 1, I had to immediately pick up Vol 2! I loved this one too! We continue off in the next year and you can really see the maturity and growth Bitty has gone through between Vol 1 (Year 1&2) and Vol 2 (Year 3&4). Even the illustration you can see growth – I can’t always see aging in my graphic novel characters, so this was a nice touch done by Ukazu. I think this is an amazing series and I’m sad to see it finish.

When No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole

Wow! Just wow! This was amazing! I had gone into it knowing nothing – and to be honest that’s how you should go into this, so if you haven’t read it jump to the next book! Ok? Gone? You’ve read it? K… I wasn’t expecting this to take place in one neighbourhood – it I pictured this as a small, close-knit one (I’m picturing townhouse condo design style – Southern Ontarians know what I mean). I absolutely loved the atmosphere you got from Cole’s writing! You felt like you were part of it and you felt for each one of these characters – even the ones you only met once or twice (everyone had a personality and you connected with them instantly). The twists were not at all what I was expecting – I may guessed close to but never to the extent that they were delivered or the discoveries. If this is how Cole write thrillers then I most definitely need to read her romances!

I gave this one 4.5 ⭐
