My Thoughts

I had very, very high hopes for this sequel.  I loved A Curse So Dark and Lonely so much (one of my top 10 of 2019) and I really wanted this to be everything.

When I first started it and found out that it wasn’t following Rhen and Harper this time I was surprised.  I had been avoiding any sort of spoilers (didn’t even read the synopsis) and all I knew was that we would be getting Grey’s perspective.  So my thinking was: Rhen, Harper, and Grey.  Turns out I was wrong.  We now get Grey’s perspective along with a new character, Lia Mara.  It took a little while to get over this disappointment.  I loved Grey and his interaction with Rhen and Harper.  Oddly, I had expected some sort of love triangle trope in the story… but sigh that was not the case.

Once I finally got my head wrapped around that I wasn’t getting what I was originally expecting I was able to enjoy the story as it was.  The story was full of suspense and we saw more of the Cursebreaker’s world – expanding beyond Emberfall.  There was less focus on luxury and more on… well camping I guess.  I loved seeing this side of all the characters.

Not only do we get more time with Grey – which yay! – but we also got more time with Jake and Noah.  Now, at first I wasn’t too happy about this.  I wasn’t fond of Jake in the first book and the beginning portion of this one wasn’t proving to be any better, but Kemmerer is able to not only change my mind about Jake but also has me liking him.

We also get three new characters: Lia Mara, Tycho, and Iisak.  Lia Mara is a strong character who feels she is the lesser of Karis Luran’s two children.  She is not my favourite character at first, but as we get more and more chapters from her perspective, I found I was enjoying her outlook and was liking her.  Tycho is a companion that Grey had worked with while he was in hiding.  Now forgive me as I didn’t note his actual age, but I was constantly picturing him as an eight-year-old, while some of the comments made about him made me think he may be older.  Lastly, is Iisak, a creature called scraver from a country on the other side of the mountain/Frozen river.  I loved this character! He’s dark and brooding and I picture him as… well it’s not exactly how she describes him, but by the end, I pictured him as man mixed with a dragon.

The conflict and the storyline were amazing.  I devoured the second half of the book so quickly – which is when it really started to ramp up for me.  I wasn’t sure how it would end, but wow!  The twists at the end were just amazing and yet frustrating because I NEED the final book right this minute!  All I have to say is, is it 2021 yet? lol.

If you liked the first book then I highly recommend grabbing the second one right away!  If you haven’t started the series, then what are you waiting for!? Go get it!  Kemmerer’s writing is amazing and I’m loving her writing in fantasy.
