Goodreads Synopsis: Talking to other people isn’t Kate Bailey’s favorite activity. She’d much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school’s podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she’ll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible.
But to Kate’s surprise, she turns out to be pretty good at the hosting gig. Then the podcast gets in a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana. Kate is excited for her friend … until Kate herself starts to develop feelings for Diego. Suddenly, Kate finds that while doling out wisdom to others may be easy, asking for help is tougher than it looks, and following your own advice is even harder.
Kasie West’s adorable story of secrets, love, and friendship is sure to win over hearts everywhere.
Kasie West is one of my favourite YA Contemporary authors. I fly through them and it’s an enjoyable experience – usually. There have only ever been two books that I haven’t been too fond of (mind you these are three stars). These are pure happy fluff.
This one follows Kate who loves the lake and wants to work for her family’s marina. She believes this is the be-all-and-end-all and there is no point of school because she already knows. That’s how it starts – on this gorgeous lake and we are forced to attend school (which I must say I feel for Kate since right now it’s summer and who wants to go to school now?!). We find out that Kate signed up for a podcast class (when did high school classes become so cool!?!) that her friend, Alana, forced her to sign up for. She’s hoping to stay in the background (yup, I’m all for that), but the teacher assigns her to be one of the co-hosts (a nightmare for me! at that time in my life lol). Now from there, we get to experience Kate’s friendships, family life and love life. It was a fun experience getting to grow along with Kate. We learn how kind and intuitive she can really be, despite her thinking everyone else would be better suited for any particular job (outside of anything to do with the marina).
Alana is fun, flirty and kind of pushy. Diego is sweet, but we learn kind of shy. While Frank is someone not to be trusted – ok not really, he’s just the misunderstood character of this story. Kimberly, the cohost, is super bubbly and I was hoping we would get to learn more about her, but she was more of a third-tier character. There was really no one to hate in this story – well we kind of like-hate Frank – but no one truly evil waiting to sabotage Kate’s day. That being said, there is an instance of bullying in this story – so trigger warning for that.
What more is there to say about this story. It was fun and was easily read within a day. It made me desperately want to live on the water! This one of my top favourite of Kasie West’s books. What about you? Have you read it? What did you think?
